Italy closed…..well almost

25 August 2010

It’s that time of the year when you have to think or check before you venture out. Restaurants close, shops close, offices close, sometimes without notice, and everyone  heads for the beach or the mountains. With a stream of visitors we have had to make sure we book restaurants, not to ensure a table,  but to make sure they are open.

During the past week or so we have enjoyed 3 completely different tastings, from the small family-run, to the historical, to the “rockstar” newcomer. In their own ways all with unique styles and emphasis and  in particular wines we enjoy drinking.

A reminder

4 August 2010

Last night with dinner we opened a couple of good friends, a bottle of Sciorio Reginal, Monferrato Rosso D.O.C and a bottle of their Barbera d’Asti Beneficio both from the 2006 vintage. I always enjoy their company. The former which is a blend of Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon had been aged in barriques for an amazing 39 months, a stunning woody mouthful destined for longevity; full bodied, good length and surprisingly only 13.5%. The Beneficio had only had 24 months of the barrique treatment and despite 14.5% alcohol has a real elegance about it. Both wines offer exceptional value at <€10 a bottle and we mustn’t run out!
