Last night with dinner we opened a couple of good friends, a bottle of Sciorio Reginal, Monferrato Rosso D.O.C and a bottle of their Barbera d’Asti Beneficio both from the 2006 vintage. I always enjoy their company. The former which is a blend of Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon had been aged in barriques for an amazing 39 months, a stunning woody mouthful destined for longevity; full bodied, good length and surprisingly only 13.5%. The Beneficio had only had 24 months of the barrique treatment and despite 14.5% alcohol has a real elegance about it. Both wines offer exceptional value at <€10 a bottle and we mustn’t run out! We also popped into the Enoteca Regionale in Barbaresco yesterday to see what was available for tasting. Always a must for visitors as its home is a former church and every day there are 6 Barbarescos available to taste (€1.50 a small glass). Among the 6 on offer was a cantina that we had not visited but had passed frequently on the main street of Barbaresco, Carlo Boffa. We will put that right soon as the wine was good and relatively inexpensive. A coffee in Rosanna’s new bar in Neive Alto led to an introduction to Franco Rocca and another Cantina to add to the “must visit” list.
